What is Dysthymia?

Dysthymia is a more mild, longer lasting form of depression that is often compared to a low level general dissatisfaction with life; Dysthymia often lasts for years as it goes undiagnosed and untreated. It is not known what causes dysthymia but it is known that it tends to run in families and be more prevalent in women than in men. It is believed that approximately 5% of the general population suffers from dysthymia.

Some symptoms of dysthymia include poor concentration, insomnia or hypersomnia, eating disorders, low self esteem, low energy or fatigues, physical aches and pains, feelings of hopelessness, apathy and pessimism.
