What is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD is an anxiety disorder which is experienced by people who have been through or witnessed a traumatic or dangerous experience. Occasionally, the individual will experience PTSD as a result of witnessing or knowing that someone they care for is in a dangerous or is harmed. PTSD can also be caused by physical, emotional or sexual abuse.
There are many symptoms of PTSD but the three main symptoms are Re-experiencing symptoms such as flash backs, bad dreams or scary thoughts; Avoidance symptoms such as avoiding people, places, events or objects that are reminders of the traumatic experience, guilt, depression and worry, selective amnesia possibly around the event and emotional numbing; and Hyperarousal symptoms such as being easily startled, insomnia, irritability, edginess or angry outbursts.
Often sufferers of PTSD use alcohol or drugs to ease the symptoms of their anxiety. Individuals with PTSD often become depressed or even suicidal.
